An official UK £2 coin has been issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate 350 years of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich – the historic British institution that revolutionised our understanding of longitude, navigation and time.

Commissioned by King Charles II in 1675, the Royal Observatory played a critical role in charting the seas and skies to define time itself, with Greenwich Mean Time becoming a global benchmark.

Each coin features a reverse design by Henry Gray, blending together centuries of astronomical discovery. From the North Star to the Shepherd Gate Clock, each element on this £2 coin reflects the Royal Observatory’s contribution to science, navigation and global exploration.

The obverse bears the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings.

The edge of the coin is inscribed with the phrase ‘PERFECTING THE ART OF NAVIGATION’ – a fitting tribute to 350 years of discovery.

Struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated finish – a superior standard to regular circulating coins – this £2 coin comes presented in official Royal Mint packaging.
